Reginald Smith Jr.
A native of Atlanta, Georgia Reggie is a member of the Houston Grand Opera Studio. Reginald has been seen in performances of Falstaff (Falstaff), La Traviata (Germont), Porgy and Bess (Jake/Frazier), Romeo et Juliette (Capulet/Le Duke), The Magic Flute (Speaker), Madame Butterfly (Bonzo), Die Fledermaus (Dr. Falke/Dr.Blind), La Boheme (Colline), Le Nozze di Figaro (Figaro/Antonio), Mikado (Mikado), Pirates of Penzance (Pirate King), River of Time (Billy), and Amahl and the Night Visitors (Balthazar).
He has participated in summer music programs including Opera Theater of St. Louis, The American Institute of Musical Studies Program in Graz , Austria , Lyric Opera Studio of Weimar in Weimar, Germany, the Premiering Sydney Program in Sydney , Australia , Intermezzo Young Artist Program, Janiec Opera Company at the Brevard Music Center, and Seagle Music Colony.
He has performed with several orchestras including the Cincinnati Pops, the Houston Symphony Orchestra, the Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra, the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra, the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra, the Johnson City Symphony, the Evansville Symphony Orchestra, and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.
Mr. Smith has been an award recipient in many competitions including the George London Foundation Competition, the Dallas Opera Guild COmpetition, and he has won the Grand Prize for the Orpheus COmpetition. In 2012, Mr. Smith won 1st Place in the National Opera Association Competition Scholarship Division, and he was the 2nd place winner of the Central Regional Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. In 2011, Mr. Smith received the Best Stage Presence Award and 3rd Place in the Metropolitan Opera Mid-South Regional Auditions. This season, Mr. Smith is a National Semifinalist for the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.
This past season, with the Houston Grand Opera, Mr. Smith was seen in performances of Die Fledermaus (Dr. Blind), Rigoletto (Marullo), and Carmen (Dancaïre). Also, with Cincinnati Opera, Mr. Smith was seen in performances of Madame Butterfly (Bonzo). This season, he will be seen in performances of The Magic Flute (Speaker) and Madame Butterfly (Bonzo) with Houston Grand Opera, performances of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony (Johnson City Symphony), Berlioz’s Romeo et Juliette (Boise Philharmonic), several concerts and recitals, and he can be seen this summer with the Wolf Trap Opera Company as a Filene Young Artist in performances of Le nozze di Figaro (Conte Almaviva).
